ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — If you stopped at Dunkin’ for a coffee Friday morning, you may have noticed a police presence at certain locations, but it was all for a good cause.
Police across the Capital Region held events at select Dunkin’ locations to raise money for the Special Olympics. All proceeds benefit the hundreds of athletes that compete in the games.
“It provides athletic competition to individuals with Down syndrome and autism in 22 different sports, and over 40,000 athletes in New York,” Special Olympics New York Dir. of Development Christ Hughes said. “We are the sixth largest chapter in the world with 3,000 athletes here in the Capital Region.”
“It’s not just for a good cause; it’s for an opportunity to support athletes like me,” athlete and awareness coordinator Jude Killar said.
Glens Falls will be hosting New York’s Fall Special Olympics in October. Around 1,500 athletes are expected to attend the competition.
