CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – With Halloween on Friday, local departments are reminding residents to stay safe while enjoying a night of festive and spooky fun.
Officials are sharing important reminders for parents, drivers, and trick-or-treaters alike.
The Orange Fire Department announced that the town’s official trick-or-treating hours will take place Thursday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 8 p.m. “Be safe and have fun tomorrow! Trick-or-treating in Orange is from 5–8 p.m. Fingers crossed that the weather holds out,” the department said in a post encouraging families to enjoy the evening responsibly.
In South Hadley, police urged parents to ensure younger children are accompanied by a responsible adult and to plan ahead if older children are trick-or-treating on their own. “A responsible adult should accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds. If your older children are going alone, plan and review a route acceptable to you. Agree on a specific time children should return home,” the department said.
Officers also advised families to prioritize safety and awareness throughout the night. “Teach your children never to enter a stranger’s home or car. Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and stick with their friends. Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home to avoid any food allergies.”
Both children and adults are being asked to stay alert when walking or driving during trick-or-treating hours. “Children and adults are reminded to put electronic devices down, keep their heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street,” police said.
For motorists, South Hadley police offered extra precautions. “Watch for children walking on roadways, medians, and curbs. Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully. At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing,” the department added, alongside a safety graphic from MassDOT.
With hundreds of families expected to participate across both towns, local departments emphasized that Halloween should be a time for fun and community — but also caution.
Trick-or-treating in Orange runs from 5 to 8 p.m. on Halloween night. South Hadley’s police remind all residents: stay visible, stay alert, and enjoy the spooky season safely.
