The Israeli Defense Forces said on Tuesday that 21 of soldiers were killed in a single incident in the Gaza Strip, in the deadliest loss of life for the IDF since the start of the ground offensive against Hamas.
According to the IDF, reservist units on Monday were clearing out houses in central Gaza about 600 metres from the border with Israel when two buildings exploded and collapsed on the soldiers.
The forces had laid mines ahead of planned demolitions, which were most likely set off by a rocket-propelled grenade fired on a tank nearby.
Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, the IDF spokesman, said the incident was being investigated.
