It seems Los Angeles will retain a piece of history at least long enough for 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games guests to enjoy.
Langer’s Deli, the iconic pastrami eatery near MacArthur Park in L.A.’s Westlake neighborhood, is expected to remain open through the 2028 Summer Games. In fact, restaurant owner Norm Langer indicated he was well opened to keeping the 78-year-old restaurant running through the foreseeable future, a significant backtrack from when he speculated about its viability last year.
“Langer’s and Los Angeles share a story that spans generations,” Langer said in a statement. “As our city prepares to welcome the world for three unforgettable milestones – the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Super Bowl LXI in 2027 and the 2028 Olympic Games – we want to continue serving Angelenos and visitors from across the globe.”
The restaurant, founded by Langer’s father Al, is known for its coveted #19 pastrami sandwich that is typically ranked among L.A.’s finest. Langer had voiced concerns about the restaurant’s future last year, citing public safety and health issues in and around MacArthur Park. This month, Langer said his pleas were heard – specifically by Mayor Karen Bass, the Los Angeles Police Department and city departments.
“The city’s investments of time, resources and focus have made a real difference. People see the change, and we’re grateful to be here for them,” he said. “We are optimistic that this progress will continue, it must continue and Langer’s will do its part to be part of that progress.”
