Keeping Halloween safe: Efforts begin next week to crack down on impaired driving in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – With Halloween just a week away, law enforcement agencies from across the state are gearing up for a “Booze It & Lose It” campaign aimed at cracking down on drunk and impaired driving.

“Halloween should be a night of fun, not tragedy,” said Emily Ferraro, the North Carolina executive director for Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

While the holiday offers a night of fun, it can also be dangerous for young trick-or-treaters out on our roads.

“This makes it absolutely critical for every driver to stay alert, slow down and most importantly, stay sober,” Ferraro said.

The campaign is set to start on Monday and run through the entire Halloween weekend, wrapping up on Nov. 2.

“Our goal isn’t just the enforcement piece of this, it’s also prevention,” said Mark Ezzell, the director of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program.

“Drivers are going to be able to see these increased patrols; they’re going to see increased checkpoints in some cases,” he added.

While the campaign will target drivers after they have already gotten behind the wheel, Ferraro hopes it can also build awareness to make smart decisions when out celebrating.

“Because one wrong decision can take a life, devastate a family and change a community forever,” Ferraro said.
