Kristin Kassner has won reelection to her House seat in the 2nd Essex district, fending off a challenge from Mark Tashjian.
The Associated Press called the race at 2:21 a.m. on Wednesday for Kassner, D-Hamilton, as unofficial vote tallies showed her 15,904 to 13,448 for Tashjian, R-Georgetown.
She said in a statement later Wednesday the reelection margin was roughly 2,460 votes.
“I can hardly express the immense gratitude I am feeling for how voters showed up yesterday. I am here because of all of you,” Kassner said in a prepared statement. “I am so grateful to all that made this journey possible: Your hard work, your belief in this cause, and your unwavering support have been the backbone of this campaign.”
Kassner, 45, will continue to represent Ipswich, Hamilton, Rowley, Newbury, Georgetown, and Precinct 1 of Topsfield.
She told The Salem News ahead of Tuesday’s election that she aims to secure more funding for her communities in a second term, as well as protect the Great Marsh and Ipswich River Watershed, promote agriculture, support local businesses and address the state’s housing crisis.
“The people of the 2nd Essex voted for leadership that brings people together, works collaboratively to get stuff done, and is focused on making lives better for people,” Kassner said. “I am energized to get back to work for our communities.”
Tashjian, 37, is the CEO of Boston Polo Club and a member of the Georgetown Finance Committee. This was his first time running for the seat.
