Karoline Leavitt, White House press secretary, blamed Democrats in a tweet on Tuesday for the fact that “cruel” shutdown votes had forced the WIC nutrition program to run out of funds, prompting the Trump administration to redirect tariff revenue to keep it afloat.
Leavitt said the White House tapped Section 232 tariff funds to support the program for low-income women and children, framing the move as a direct response to what she called partisan obstruction.
The administration has not released details on the transfer or confirmed whether the funding will restore WIC services.
