CLEVELAND (WJW) — The trial of a woman charged with fatally stabbing a 3-year-old boy outside a North Olmsted grocery store last year was set to begin on Wednesday, Oct. 1, with the jury selection process.
Bionca S. Ellis, 34, of Cleveland, was indicted in Cuyahoga County on 10 total counts including aggravated murder and felonious assault in the unprovoked attack on 3-year-old Julian Wood and his mother — whom investigators said Ellis did not know — in the parking lot of the store in June 2024.
Ellis has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. She was previously ordered for treatment at a mental health facility and was deemed fit to stand trial.
The FOX 8 I-Team reported a judge on Tuesday, Sept. 29, denied defense attorneys’ request for jury sequestration, through which jurors would be hidden away from the public during the trial, to avoid outside influence.
County Judge John Russo said the court “believes that it can mitigate any prejudice with clear instruction and order to the jury once it is selected.”
Attorneys do not expect opening statements in the trial to happen until Monday, Oct. 6.
