'It's just not real': Buxton homeowner watching miles away as home collapses into the ocean

BUXTON, N.C. (WNCN) — A total of nine homes have now collapsed into the ocean this week in the Outer Banks.

This is happening because of erosion from years of storms and from the huge waves churned up by hurricanes Imelda and Humberto making houses even more vulnerable.

“I don’t know if its easier being here then it is being there,” Carolyn Hoagland, owner of one of the collapsed homes said.

Hoagland has been watching the houses collapse from Virginia. Hers was the sixth one to go down.

Now, all of her memories are scattered across Buxton Beach.

“At first its just not real,” Hoagland said.

She said for years the home was filled with good food and laughter, any time they went to visit. Her husband and her built the house in 1984.

“The saddest part is I never got anything out,” Hoagland said.

Including a brand new dishwasher and chairs that she never used. But Hoagland said those things weren’t what she really missed.

Her husband hand built most of the furniture inside. It’s some of the last things he touched before dying in 2023.

“If I was there, I would want to be going through everything on the beach,” Hoagland said.

The only thing that was saved is a picture that was picked up by a friend on the beach after seeing a photo on social media.

Hoagland said when they first built their home, it was no where close to being a waterfront home. Now her neighbors, whose homes have not collapsed, are waiting to see if they will be next.

“You could not imagine when we built that it would ever come to this point,” Hoagland said.
