HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The family of a 21-year-old man fatally stabbed last December spoke with ABC13 about his tragic passing.
According to court documents, Keylan Foreman was attacked with a screwdriver in northeast Houston and died weeks later.
Investigators said the suspect, 23-year-old Jayla Brown, is now charged with his murder.
“It’s hurt. It’s hurt. It’s a different kind of hurt,” said Keylan’s mother, Mekelle Foreman.
Foreman’s family said even at a young age, he had a presence that filled every room.
“Very protective. He did so much…just so much for everybody. Everyone he was around, he made happier. He was the life of the party,” said Keylan’s brother, Ashton Foreman.
According to court documents, the incident happened near Laura Koppe Road and Lockwood Drive on Dec. 27.
Court records said Brown told detectives she was in an “on and off” relationship with Foreman, and that the two were arguing outside her vehicle when she alleged he hit her.
After looking through surveillance video from a nearby business, detectives said there was no evidence backing Brown’s claims. However, officials did say there was video showing Brown knocking Foreman to the ground and attacking him while she had a long, thin object in her right hand.
According to detectives, Brown told them she was going to drive Foreman to the hospital, but didn’t have enough gas, so she stopped at a gas station and asked someone to call 911.
Officers found Foreman at the scene unconscious and bleeding before he was rushed to the hospital, according to the documents.
“They had to put a tube in his head. It was just a lot. And his left side was paralyzed,” said Foreman’s mother.
Foreman’s family said after the stabbing, he was slowly recovering and started communicating more with them.
“It was a breath of fresh air because he was coming back,” said Ivy Hayes, Keylan’s aunt.
But one night in rehab, Hayes said things took a turn for the worse.
“He said, ‘This stuff is making my head hurt.’ That’s when he was going into a seizure,” Hayes said.
According to the family, Keylan died a little over three weeks after the attack. Autopsy reports showed the injuries were from a screwdriver.
Brown now faces a murder charge for Foreman’s death.
“We just didn’t get to bring him home,” Hayes said.
“Long live my brother,” Ashton said.
According to court documents, Brown’s bond was set at $150,000. Online records showed she is still in custody at the Harris County Jail.
