(INSIDE CALIFORNIA POLITICS) — San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan joined Inside California Politics this week for a wide-ranging interview that focused primarily on homelessness, mental health services and funding for Proposition 36.

Mahan slammed Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Legislature over a lack of funding for the popular ballot measure and called the current $100 million allocation “embarrassing.” Mahan argued that building the treatment capacity for addiction and mental illness is a pressing priority for many cities and neighborhoods, and that the state needs to mandate treatment for those who refuse to seek help. His comments come after the City of San Jose passed an ordinance that allows officers to arrest homeless individuals for trespassing if they refuse shelter three times in an 18-month period. Mahan said San Jose’s approach to solving homelessness is proving successful, with the city’s unsheltered population decreasing by 23% since 2020.

The interview also touched on the California governor’s race, the influence of special interest groups in Sacramento and ways state leaders can make California more business friendly. Plus, political strategists Rob Stutzman and Andrew Acosta stop in for a panel discussion on redistricting.
