Outdoor plans won’t be washed out, but we’ll need to watch for two potential rounds of strong-to-severe storms on Memorial Day.

The heat is on as we move through the heart of the holiday weekend – but today makes 262 straight days without a 90° high in the Queen City. While the summer-like temperatures continue into Memorial Day Monday, the bigger story will be the potential for severe storms. While your outdoor plans won’t be washed out, we’ll need to stay weather-wise for cells packing heavy rain, gusty winds, and damaging hail. While the tornado threat is low, it has risen since yesterday – especially east of the Metro. A line of storms will approach overnight into Monday morning for areas around Charlotte and westward, bringing a low-end wind and rain threat before dissipating. The second round arrives later in the afternoon into the evening; these storms will be more isolated, but also more intense.

A marked drop in humidity arrives behind the cold front that drives Monday’s severe threat. Temperatures will cool into the lower 80s by midweek and may struggle to get out of the 70s around the Piedmont and Foothills on Thursday and Friday. Temperatures and dew points recover into next weekend, but rain chances appear few and far between for the five days following Monday.

Tonight: A few storms early, then mostly clear. More storms late. Low: 72°. Wind: S 5-10.

Monday: AM storms west. PM scattered storms. A few may be severe. High: 87°. Wind: SW 5-15. Gusts: 20+

Monday Night: A few storms early, then clearing. Low: 66°. Wind: W 5-10.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny. Much drier. High: 87°. Wind: NE 5-10.
