CLEVELAND (WJW) — New video released to the FOX 8 I-Team shows a crowd in the streets running away from gunfire in the Flats that left six people injured.
City of Cleveland security video captured the panic that happened on Sept. 7. The video shows a wave of people scrambling to get away from gunfire in the Flats.
The shooting led to Cleveland officials boarding up the Play Bar and Grill and later declaring the business a public nuisance.
An owner of the bar, however, on Monday showed the I-Team new video showing the bar was virtually empty prior to the shooting. The owner said management called the fire department because the club had been overcrowded. The owner said fire officials had been clearing the club because the bar wanted to close down.
“Saying that we had any kind of fight or incident that led to that — that’s a complete lie,” said David Hill, one of the bar’s owners. “We should not be blamed. The video shows we had a very peaceful environment that people ran to as a safe haven for something that happened a block away.”
The owners of Play Bar and Grill are now fighting the city in court. The case has now been transferred to federal court. The city said it can show a history of trouble in recent months tied to the bar. The owners said that statement is not true.
“We’ve never received not one police report or any kind of questioning about it,” Hill said.
So far, one person faces charges for the shooting that left six people hurt. Police told us the case remains under investigation.
