Because an illuminated Krispy Kreme HOT NOW sign never ceases to draw me in like a moth to a flame, this video animation created by Jared Owen details how Krispy Kreme’s automated donut-making machine works. I have seen these machines operating in real life, and I’d be lying if I said I couldn’t watch them for hours.

A donut’s journey begins in a mixer, with the dough’s ingredients being thoroughly mixed before being added to the extruder, the first part of the automated machine. It extrudes rings of raw batter, which then travel into the proofer, traveling vertically up and down on elevators over 30 minutes while the dough rises. Then, they’re dropped into the fryer. Halfway through the fryer, they’re automatically flipped before coming out to cool and taking a trip under my favorite part of the machine: THE GLAZE WATERFALL. I wish I had a glaze waterfall in my kitchen.

Donuts are, sticky hands down, one of my favorite foods of all time. Whether made by an artisan donut chef or an automated Krispy Kreme machine, I love them all. True story: I had a sugar-covered jelly-filled and powder-covered creme-filled for lunch today from the grocery store, and no regrets.
