DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado lakes and reservoirs are expected to be busier as time moves closer to the end of the summer and the Labor Day holiday weekend.

A new study compiled using statistics provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and United States Coast Guard and utilized by personal injury lawyers Anidjar & Levine shows Colorado ranks fourth in the nation for dangerous boating.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesperson Kara Van Hoose said any type of watercraft, including boats, jet skis, paddle boards and kayaks, should be used responsibly.

“We hope people know what they’re doing before they get out on the water,” Van Hoose said.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association saw a 36% increase nationwide in boating-related businesses in 2023. When it comes to the most dangerous states for boating Alaska is on top with 69% of accidents resulting in death, 47% in New Mexico, 44% in Washington and 43% in Colorado (with 35 accidents) followed by 30% in Montana.

CPW says every boater should ensure all passengers are prepared.

“That’s taking a boating safety course that’s making sure you have the right equipment and the forecast before you choose to go out,” said Van Hoose.

It’s also important to observe Colorado’s safety requirements.

“Anyone who’s younger needs to have that life jacket on at all times and we are out there doing patrols to make sure everybody stays safe on the water,” she said.
