Two hikers were rescued from a snowy mountainside in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area.

Two hikers ended up lost in snowy mountains in Washington with only a blue tarp for shelter, deputies said.
Authorities got their 911 text before 11 a.m. Oct. 19, the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
The two hikers got lost in “unexpected snow” near Peggy’s Pond Trail in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area, deputies said.
They were wet and cold, so rescuers set out to find them.
After about 5 miles of hiking in snow, rescuers discovered the two hikers uninjured on a mountainside, deputies said.
Deputies warn that mountain conditions change quickly.
These are the 10 essentials hikers should carry:
- Navigation: Map, compass and GPS system
- Sun protection: Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat
- Insulation: Jacket, hat, gloves, rain shell and thermal underwear
- Illumination: Flashlight, lanterns and headlamp
- First-aid supplies: First aid kit
- Fire: Matches, lighter and fire starters
- Repair kit and tools: Duct tape, knife, screwdriver and scissors
- Nutrition: Food
- Hydration: Water and water treatment supplies
- Emergency shelter: Tent, space blanket, tarp and a bivy
The Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area is in the Cascade Range, about a 115-mile drive east from Seattle.
