High fire danger expected across nearly half of Colorado Sunday

SUPERIOR, Colo. (KDVR) — A large part of the state is expected to be under a fire danger warning Sunday.

At Mountain View Fire Rescue, crews have responded to some wildland fires, but rain and snow have had an impact on the severity of those fires.

Ben Cooper is a senior fire medic at MVFR.

“Are the trees moving,” Cooper said, “is it windy?”

That’s what Cooper said is an obvious sign to just about anyone: the fire danger might be higher on windy days.

“I know we’re over a hundred percent in terms of our snowpack and we’re certainly happy about that for a number of reasons,” Cooper said.

More rain and snow this season has been a reason for fewer intense fires in the state.

“We’re still absolutely prepared, ready to go, ready to fight a wildland fire,” Cooper said. “If we get called to a smoke report, we always expect fire.”

Their equipment is just as prepped to answer the call with every compartment on their wildland apparatus packed with something to help fight the fire.

Cooper said you could help the effort.

“If it’s a red flag day, please don’t burn outdoors,” Cooper said. “Please follow the outdoor burn bans that are in place when they do go in place from the county level.”

If you’re not sure, Cooper said it’s as easy as making a call or checking the internet.

“Phone a friend, call the county,” Cooper said, “call the fire department and see what days or what weeks might be a good call.”

Anyone can check the status of fire bans across the state online.
