Heavy rains bring flooding across the Bay area

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Heavy rains across the Bay area has led to flooding throughout the region.

On Wednesday evening, rain water swamped streets in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.

Areas of Gulfport on 58^th Street and St. Petersburg 34^th Avenue and 66^th Street all saw heavy flooding Wednesday.

Some streets saw mid-tire levels of water before receding.

Intersections in West Tampa, Carrollwood and Town ‘N Country in Tampa also had street flooding.

Parking lots across the area were filled with water as the saturated grounds continued to get pounded with more water Wednesday into Thursday morning.

Tampa Fire Rescue received multiple calls last night from people trapped in vehicles stuck in floodwaters.

According to Bay News 9 meteorologists, some areas of the area received anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of rain during the past two days. 

“We’ve had 8.3 inches of rain in Tampa in just two days,” said Bay News 9 Meteorologist Juli Marquez. “3.63” of rain in Tampa Wednesday and 4.67″ on Tuesday. Thursday will start out mainly dry, but scattered to numerous thunderstorms will develop in the afternoon and evening.

Highs will top off in the low 90s.

Some storms could come down heavy at times later in the day.
