DC Police are searching for a suspect who fired multiple rounds along New Jersey Ave. around 3:15 a.m. Saturday morning.
WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — Around 3:15 a.m. Saturday, MPD says an officer heard gunfire near the Insignia on M apartments on New Jersey Avenue Southeast. Investigators found two windows damaged by gunfire. One on the first-floor lobby and a second on the fifth floor which is a residence.
“I was already awake. It was around 3 o’clock. I heard six shots,” said Pam who has lived in the Insignia on M apartments for six years. “It sure sounded like a gunshot. You kind of learn what it is living around here. You get like immersed in it.”
Police say someone fired shots into the building. Luckily nobody was hurt.
Navy Yard is an area MPD has put an emphasis on this summer with extended curfews for young people and extra patrols after dozens of people, mostly teens, had been arrested here.
“The youth seem to get away with a lot of stuff. They cause havoc shooting fireworks at people, right at them because it was shot at me,” said Pam. “They ride their bikes right in the middle of traffic and they just make circles. They block you from doing things.”
Recently, members of the National Guard began patrolling the area and have been seen regularly stationed near Navy Yard’s Metro entrance, feet from where the shooting happened.
Pam says initially, their presence was felt.
“The last few weeks, couple weeks when it all started, it has been wonderful. It was shockingly great,” she said. “Now it’s like, I feel like maybe they’re waiting it out. I don’t know.”
Residents tell me the National Guard troops weren’t around at the time of Saturday morning’s shooting.
Pam says she’s fed up with the area and plans to move.
“Something’s going on all the time, but I’d say this year is probably the worst,” she said.
Police say the suspect fled the area. No arrests have been announced.
