HOUSTON, Texas — NRG Energy will erect a new natural gas facility at its Greens Bayou plant in northeast Houston, Governor Abbott said on Tuesday.
Abbott said the new 455-megawatt plant is a $617 million investment by NRG in Harris County and will add power to Texas’ energy infrastructure.
“Smart investments like these will power and sustain an even brighter future in Texas for generations to come,” Abbott said.
According to Abbott, the project is a result of 2024’s Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program. Officials said the initiative was launched to attract large, capital-intensive economic development projects that bring new capital investment and create new jobs in Texas communities.
Abbott said the plant is expected to begin supplying power to ERCOT in 2028.
“Moving Texas forward to meet rising energy demand involves public-private partnership, and NRG is grateful the Greens Bayou new build project is part of Governor Abbott’s innovative JETI program,” said NRG President Robert Gaudette.
Galena Park ISD Superintendent John Moore added that the district is excited about the potential of NRG’s investment, but did not provide further details on the district’s involvement in the project.
NRG’s Greens Bayou plant is located along Beaumont Highway in northeast Houston.
