ASSURANT FINDS HOME: Atlanta-based Assurant, which has occupied a 78-acre South Dade campus since 1982, has leased 78,000 square feet near Miami International Airport in the fifth, sixth and seventh floors of 701 Waterford Way, which three real estate firms involved say is Miami’s largest office transaction this year. Meanwhile, Assurant continues to talk with Miami-Dade County, which has been looking at buy Assurant’s seven buildings and land at 11222 Quail Roost Drive. Three of those buildings are office buildings. Assurant, which provides risk management products and services, employs about 2,000 workers in the area. Move-in is planned in June 2025.

MORE INSPECTION POWER: The Miami City Commission has approved on first reading a proposed charter amendment outlining qualifications, term limits and powers of a proposed Office of the Independent Inspector General. The ballot language is to be submitted to the county supervisor of elections to be included in the Aug. 20 primary, when residents would ultimately approve or reject the amendment to the city’s charter.

FILM, MAYORAL HISTORY: Two 20th century Miami landmarks are poised to receive historic designations after the city commission approved requests by residents acting to preserve them. The first designation is for the Halissee Hall Gates that once enclosed the 1912 estate of John Sewell, Miami’s third mayor, and aims to preserve the site for potential conversion into a pocket park. The second designation is for the Fleischer Film Studios, built in 1938, which employed over 700 artists and produced one-reel Popeye short films, as well as feature-length films like Gulliver’s Travels and Mr. Bug Goes to Town and would go on to become the first studio to bring Superman to the screen. The historic marker to be installed outside the studio, educating the public about the little-known yet highly influential studio, would be the first in the state concerning Florida’s rich film history.

YWCA AFFORDABLE HOUSING: The YWCA South Florida has received a green light to move forward with a proposed mixed-used, mixed-income residential project to be developed at its Overtown campus that will focus on the economic advancement of women and working families. The Miami City Commission last week approved modifications to the covenant running with the land at 351 NW Fifth St., which was deeded to the YWCA by Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami, paving the way for the facility to rise.

TINY GAS PRICE RISE: Gasoline prices in Miami trickled up 0.3 cents per gallon in the past week to average $3.60, according to GasBuddy.
