Nine years after the groundbreaking success of “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the legendary Australian director, screenwriter, and producer George Miller is bringing his iconic saga back to the Cannes Film Festival. The highly anticipated “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” will premiere at an Out of Competition gala screening at the Grand Théâtre Lumière at the Palais des Festivals on Wednesday, May 15, with the director and cast, including Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and Tom Burke, in attendance.

Spanning five episodes across nearly five decades, the “Mad Max” franchise has become a cathartic myth, a mythology that explores themes of societal and environmental collapse while challenging genre conventions. Originally set in the Australian Outback, the series presents a dystopian world where speed and movement symbolize life energy and death’s inevitability due to resource depletion, delivering adrenaline-fueled action rarely matched on the big screen.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” delves into the origins of Furiosa, the heroine introduced in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which garnered multiple Oscars. Actress Anya Taylor-Joy portrays the young Furiosa, navigating through hostile armed gangs as she endeavors to return home.

“The idea of this prequel has been with me for over a decade,” said George Miller. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to return to the Festival de Cannes – along with Anya, Chris, and Tom – to share ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.’ There is no better place than La Croisette to experience this film with audiences on the world stage.”

George Miller, known for his diverse filmography, which includes post-apocalyptic epics as well as family-friendly fare like “Babe” and “Happy Feet,” previously served as both a Jury member and President of the Festival de Cannes. In 2022, he presented “Three Thousand Years of Longing” out of Competition.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is set to hit Philippine theaters on May 22.

Set against the backdrop of a world in decline, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” follows the journey of young Furiosa, abducted from her home and thrust into a world ruled by warring factions. As she navigates through the chaos of the Wasteland, she encounters tyrants vying for power while striving to find her way back home.

The film features an original action-packed storyline, directed by George Miller and co-written with “Mad Max: Fury Road” collaborator Nico Lathouris. Produced by Miller and his long-time partner Doug Mitchell, the movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Alyla Browne, and Tom Burke.

Warner Bros. Pictures distributes “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” in Philippine cinemas on May 22, 2024. Join the conversation using #Furiosa.
