(FOX40.COM) — A former West Sacramento police officer has passed away while serving with the Chowchilla Police Department on Friday evening in Madera County, according to officials.

CPD said Officer Ray Barrantes was involved in an on-duty traffic collision. Despite the quick efforts of first responders, he died from the injuries he sustained in the crash at the scene.
Officials said that at this time, the circumstances of the crash are currently being investigated by the California Highway Patrol, which is working with CPD.
Chief of Police Jeff Palmer said, “Moments of tragedy like this are devastating to our department and especially the family of this amazing officer. It is going to take time for our department to heal from this tragic loss.”
CPD said Barrantes was a dedicated and respected member of the department and had many years of experience in the law enforcement industry.
West Sacramento police took to Facebook and posted the following statement.
“We are saddened to learn of the passing of former WSPD Officer Ray Barrantes, who was serving with Chowchilla PD at the time of his death. We ask that you keep his family, children and the men and women of the Chowchilla Police Department in your thoughts during this tragic time.”
