More information has emerged about the arrest of former Prince Andrew, who now goes by Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. His latest legal trouble centers on serious trade allegations that investigators say could reshape how the public views his long shadowed ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
On Thursday, British police arrested the 66-year-old royal on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The move follows renewed scrutiny over claims that, while serving as the United Kingdom’s special envoy for international trade in 2010, Mountbatten-Windsor shared confidential trade reports with Epstein. Thames Valley Police confirmed that a man in his 60s from Norfolk was taken into custody. While authorities did not name him, they pointed to their public statement when asked if the suspect was Mountbatten-Windsor.
Earlier, the force said it was “assessing” reports that Mountbatten-Windsor sent confidential trade reports to Epstein in 2010. Those claims surfaced after the U.S. Justice Department released millions of pages of documents tied to its investigation into Epstein.
“Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office,’’ Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said in a statement. “We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time.”
Police also confirmed they are searching two properties connected to the investigation. The trade allegations are separate from past civil claims involving Epstein. Still, the revived focus on their correspondence has added new pressure on the royal family.
After the arrest, King Charles III addressed the situation directly.
“Let me state clearly: the law must take its course,’’ the king said. “As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter.’’
He added, “My family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.’’
Mountbatten-Windsor has consistently denied wrongdoing tied to his friendship with Epstein. The investigation remains ongoing.
