Howard University makes it official, introducing Ted White as its new head football coach on Wednesday.
WASHINGTON — Howard University officially introduced Ted White as its new head football coach on Tuesday, marking a homecoming for the former Bison quarterback and a full-circle moment for the program.
White, who played at Howard in the mid-1990s, grew emotional as he reflected on returning to the campus where his college football journey began.
“All of those emotions came back,” White said. “I started thinking about the first time I walked into the football facility as an 18-year-old kid.”
The hiring was celebrated by longtime mentors and supporters, including fellow Bison quarterback Pep Hamilton, who met White when he first came to Howard in 1995 and has remained close with him since.
“It’s a proud moment,” Hamilton said. “When Ted first stepped onto campus, we started our connection then, and we’ve been best buds ever since.”
Pro Football Hall of Famer and Grambling State legend Doug Williams also offered a strong endorsement, calling White “like a son” and emphasizing the importance of leading at one’s alma mater.
“He played here. He understands the culture,” Williams said. “When I went back to Grambling, I understood the Grambling culture. If you haven’t been there, you really don’t know. It’s very important to give back to the people who gave to you.”
White has already begun meeting with players and their families, doing so within 48 hours of being named head coach. He said his immediate focus was reassuring them during the transition.
“I wanted them to hear my voice to let them know that everything would be okay,” White said. “I was one of those guys who walked those halls. I was one of those guys who played and graduated from the university.”
Hamilton said White’s approach will resonate with the team.
“The players are going to know he’s going to lead with love,” he said.
As college football continues to evolve with NIL opportunities and the transfer portal, White said Howard’s mission remains central to his vision for the program.
“Will we compensate you for your play? Absolutely,” White said. “But what Howard University equips you with goes far beyond any money I could ever make in college football.”
For White, the opportunity to return as head coach carries deep personal meaning.
“Now I get the opportunity to change the lives of kids who are at Howard University,” he said.
