REDWOOD CITY – Crews on Wednesday afternoon were fighting a large fire at a metal recycling facility in Redwood City.
The blaze was reported just before 3 p.m. at Sims Metal, located at 699 Seaport Blvd.
Interim Deputy Fire Chief Chuck Lax said the fire broke out in a metal scrap pile that was set to be shredded. He estimated the pile was 200 feet by 200 feet and 20 to 30 feet tall.
As many as 20 firefighters were working with plant employees to knock down the fire, Lax said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries.
Smoke from the fire managed to drift into the South Bay, spurring the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety to urge residents who are sensitive to smoke to stay indoors.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
