Final round of summer heat possible around Portland Tuesday

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A late blast of summer heat is expected across the Pacific Northwest Tuesday as temperatures warm close to 90 degrees.

Portland’s late season round of summer warmth isn’t expected to last more than a day. Temperatures will warm into the upper 80s and low 90s for many across western Oregon and southwest Washington Tuesday. A ridge of high pressure along with gusty easterly winds will be the driving warming factor.

Broken heat records are unlikely, but highs will sit nearly 10 degrees warmer than average for the middle of September. Gusty easterly winds will also help to warm valley and coastal areas. These easterly winds are known as down-sloping winds that warm temperatures, dry the atmosphere, and in some cases increase the wildfire potential.

Temperatures are expected to fall closer to the average of 77 degrees by Wednesday. The low 80s and upper 70s will take Portland through the end of the week. A cooling trend will start to take place this weekend as clouds increase and the chance of rain returns Sunday.

Temperatures will remain near average through the start of next week. Average temperatures will continue to fall as rain chances increase slightly by the end of the month of September.
