PITTSFIELD, Mass. (NEWS10) — 42 year old Pittsfield native, Scott Kastner, died this month in Burlington, Vermont. Kastner was attacked by multiple juveniles outside of Burlington City Hall. The attack induced a coma and he died in the hospital shortly after. His family is left asking for answers.
“He loved to sing, he loved his kids” Scott’s brother, Shaun Kastner, recalled. “We’d go camping and fishing. All our memories are mostly when we were younger, going to church, singing in the choir.”
Scott grew up in Pittsfield and moved to Burlington in 2007. His family remembers him for his creativity and love for his children, nieces, and nephews. Shaun explained that this tragedy isn’t isolated. He feels that Burlington has a serious problem that must be addressed, before it affects someone else.
“It’s not just the violence” Shaun commented. “The whole area is drug infested. That’s where it all stems from.”
Shaun expressed the grief his whole family is feeling, and emphasized that this never should have happened.
“It’s a senseless act that happened, but there’s a lot of stuff going on out there that is senseless” Shaun expressed. “There were three attacks that happened just that week that we were there.”
As the investigation into Kastner’s death continues, his family acknowledged that he does have a past criminal record. They said his past has nothing to do with the events of his death.
“Everybody has their problems but at the end of the day, he didn’t deserve it” Shaun stated.
According to a statement from the City of Burlington Police Department, the group who assaulted Kastner fled the scene, but three juveniles involved were apprehended. One was found with a firearm that was brandished during the attack.
Kastner’s family is asking for help from the public in the face of tragedy. They’ve posted a GoFundMe for help with funeral and burial costs.
