EYES PEELED: Waterspouts possible in Northeast Ohio

[ad_1]

CLEVELAND (WJW) — Be on the lookout!

There is a chance you could spot waterspouts forming over Northeast Ohio Wednesday and Thursday morning.

FOX 8 Meteorologist Jenn Harcher, speaking about the unfavorable conditions on Lake Erie Wednesday evening, including a small craft advisory and beach hazards, said there is a possibility of waterspouts forming as well.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a waterspout is a “whirling column of air and water mist.”

“Waterspouts are common on Lake Erie during the late summer and early fall,” Harcher explained. “Known as fair-weather waterspouts, they are usually weak and short-lived.  They form over the water when cooler air moves over the warmer lake surface.  The big temperature difference causes the warm air to rise and rotate.”

Waterspouts are so common over Lake Erie that it holds the global record for producing waterspouts.
