Emergency drill held near SFO

Dozens of agencies gathered near San Francisco International Airport Wednesday to test their communication and coordination during a simulated plane crash in the Bay.

“What we’re simulating today is an aircraft accident in San Francisco Bay,” SFO spokesperson Doug Yakel said. “We’re simulating an aircraft taking off from SFO and then landing in the Bay to really test how would you do a rescue like that.”

Yakel said the goal was to ensure that the participating agencies found mistakes during the practice run so they’re ready, if needed, for a real disaster.

“We are using a ferry loaded with volunteers with makeup applied to simulate injuries to really test how would we respond to an aircraft in the water, how would we get all the resources out there to start taking care of people,” Yakel said.

Yakel said the FAA requires that airports do these types of exercises every three years, but it’s done annually at SFO for the highest level of preparedness.
