DeVonta Smith is heading into his fourth year as a Philadelphia Eagle, and he has been the best receiver the Eagles have drafted since DeSean Jackson by a long shot. His presence has helped transform the Eagles offense into one of the top offenses in the NFL. The Eagles still have this year with Smith, and they can use the 5th year option next year, but they should still look to extend his contract ASAP!
The former Heisman Trophy winner has been one of the best players on the Eagles team since they drafted him. He set the teams rookie receiving record which was previously held by DeSean Jackson. He was able to break this record with an offense that he was the focal point of which impressive because teams were zoned in on him since they could ignore Jalen Reagor. In 2o22, he broke the franchise record for most receptions in a season with 95 catches. He was one half of the first Eagles receiver duo in franchise history to surpass 1,000 yards in a season. This most recent season he was able to surpass 1,000 yards for a second time. It is hard to understate how impressive Smith’s stats have been, especially with a top 5 receiver in the NFL on the other side.
IN 2023, Smith had 81 catches for 1,066 yards and 7 touchdowns. Smith was second among all NFL wide receivers this past season in touchdowns of 25+ yards with four. He has consistently been on the field for the Eagles, only missing one game in this three year career. He is among the best route runners in the league, making him a perfect counterpart to AJ Browns physicality.
The Eagles have spent too much time searching for elite receivers, and now that they have one, they need to make sure he stays around for the long haul. The Eagles need to extend the Slim Reaper ASAP!
