CYPRESS, Texas (KTRK) — On Sunday, navigating around the icy road conditions in frigid temperatures was the task at hand for many who live near Highway 290 in Cypress.
The Cy-Fair Fire Department said that an overpass on State Highway 99 was covered in ice.
The flyovers to the Grand Parkway at 290 both inbound and outbound had to be shutdown.
Dale Hoagland and his wife were on their way to Galveston from Austin.
He told ABC13 that while he got to Cypress safely, the trip was off to a tough start.
“Austin was terrible. You know, we were probably 50 miles out before it got even passable. Yeah, there’s no traffic, so that’s a good thing,” Dale Hoagland, who drove from Austin, said.
As Hoagland and several other drivers pulled over to fill up gas, workers poured salt on parts of the parking lot to stop ice from forming.
But that wasn’t the case for many vehicles where you could see icicles hanging from trucks.
Some people like Stephanie Hendrix from Waller said that they couldn’t inside their SUV because of the frost.
“I just put some lukewarm water on because I couldn’t open the door, but it worked,” Hendrix said.
And instead of relying on the highway, she took a different path to get to the gas station.
“Well, we actually didn’t get on the overpass. We stayed on the feeder, because we didn’t really want to chance that.”
While people wait for to the ice to thaw and temperatures to go back up, they’re not only keeping themselves safe, but making sure they watch out for each other on the roads.
“You’re driving for yourself, but you’re driving for the other person. See what they’re doing. Watch that person that’s fixing to change lanes. Make sure you know what they’re doing and how they’re doing it. Give them some room,” Mithcell Brittain said.
