HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A man was killed, and a child was injured in a fatal crash on the Gulf Freeway Saturday night, the Houston Police Department said.
Authorities said the man was driving southbound with two passengers in a Dodge Durango at about 9 p.m. when he struck a wall and disabled the car.
The driver got out of the car and was standing next to it when a Chevy truck traveling southbound in the second lane hit him, police said.
The Dodge driver died from his injuries at the scene, and a girl, believed to be 9 years old, sitting in the back seat of the Chevy, was injured and taken to a hospital, officers said.
According to investigators, the Chevy driver showed no signs of impairment, and the investigation is still ongoing.
HPD said that if your vehicle becomes disabled, you should remain inside your vehicle with your seat belt fastened and call 911 or Harris County’s Motorist Assistance Program so they can send someone to help you.
“Don’t get out of your vehicle on the freeway. We always suggest, if possible, you take the nearest exit or at least get over to an emergency lane for your safety,” HPD Sgt. Rebecca Dallas said.
