One person is dead after a passenger car ran off the road and hit a disabled box truck on I-40 in Wake County, authorities say.

One person was killed Sunday in an early-morning crash on Interstate 40 between Raleigh and Garner.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol says a Lexus was traveling eastbound on I-40 at 2:04 a.m. near the Jones Sausage Road exit when it ran off the road to the right. The passenger car hit a disabled box truck that was pulled over on the shoulder waiting for roadside assistance.

A passenger in the Lexus died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision. The victim’s name has not yet been released.

The driver of the Lexus was taken to the hospital but details on the person’s condition were not immediately available. The Highway Patrol says the driver of the box truck, who had been sitting in the passenger seat at the time of the crash, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Troopers said the driver of the Lexus will face charges because speeding and alcohol are suspected to be involved. Initial reports indicate the Lexus may have been traveling at more than 100 mph, according to authorities.

Parts of the highway were closed for three hours due to the crash.
