BOYLE HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — At least one person is dead and several others are hurt after a violent crash in Boyle Heights.
Police said three women were ejected after riding in the bed of a truck. Another passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
The truck reportedly crashed into a vehicle parked on the street and flipped on its side after the impact.
“They were driving incredibly recklessly. It was very unsafe,” said witness Jessica Solorio. “It looked like they were on something.”
“They were like giggling, like having fun. To be honest, they looked kind of drunk, intoxicated,” said witness Adriana Elicea.
Video from the aftermath of the crash shows the victims’ clothing and shoes littered on the road.
A neighbor said the crash happened close to where his friend lives out of their vehicle.
“The truck never moved. He always had it parked there and never moved it,” he said in Spanish.
The crash happened just before 5 p.m. Sunday at North Chicago Street and First Street — just steps from the Los Angeles Police Department Hollenbeck Station.
Police believe the truck was traveling west on First Street when it slammed into the parked vehicles. Three women sitting in the truck’s flatbed were ejected.
The driver ran away from the crash, but didn’t get far. Police took the suspect into custody about a block away.
Police said the injured victims are in the hospital in stable condition.
Now, detectives are working to determine what speed the driver was going and if they were impaired.
