Several restaurants and outdoor dining areas on Norfolk Avenue were evacuated due to a potential gas leak.

BETHESDA, Md. — Crews are searching for the source of a potential gas leak in downtown Bethesda that led to the evacuation of several restaurants and outdoor dining areas Friday evening.

Around 300 people were evacuated near Norfolk Avenue and Cordell Avenue, according to Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson Pete Piringer. Norfolk Avenue between Delray Avenue and Saint Elmo Avenue was closed and multiple stores were evacuated out of an abundance of caution.

Crews were at the scene looking for the source of the leak, per a post by Piringer on X, formerly Twitter. There have been no reports of fire, but Piringer said gas meter readings were high.
