Did María Corina Machado dedicate her Nobel Peace Prize to Trump?

In the lead-up to the announcement of the 2025 Nobel Prize awards in October 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump argued on multiple occasions that he deserved to win the year’s Nobel Peace Prize. On Oct. 10, that prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado because of her efforts to advance democracy in Venezuela.

Following the announcement, various posts (archived) on X (archived), Instagram (archived) and Facebook (archived) claimed Machado dedicated her prize to Trump. Many Snopes readers sent us emails asking whether the claim was true.

The claim is true; however, Machado didn’t dedicate her prize to Trump alone.

On Oct. 10, after the Nobel Foundation announced it was awarding Machado the prize, she posted to X (archived) that the recognition was a boost to completing her nation’s task of “conquering freedom.” She ended the post by dedicating the prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to Trump. The full post was as follows:

This recognition of the struggle of all Venezuelans is a boost to conclude our task: to conquer Freedom. 

We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy. 

I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!

Several Snopes readers also asked whether a clip (archived) of Trump claiming that Machado told him he deserved the prize was true. While Snopes couldn’t verify what Machado told Trump, we can confirm that the clip itself is real.

During a news conference Oct. 10, Trump told reporters Machado called him earlier in the day. “The person who actually got the Nobel Prize called today, called me, and said ‘I’m accepting this in honor of you because you really deserved it,’” he said.
