Design: A Girly Bedroom for the Ages – Charlotte Magazine

Jess Ebert had already renovated a number of rooms in her clients’ Dilworth bungalow when they hired her to redesign their 6-year-old daughter’s bedroom. “Working with repeat clients, you learn their style and how they make decisions,” Ebert says. “At this point, I already knew their aesthetic, so they told me to just go for it.” She furnished the bedroom with a queen-size bed that the girl could grow into and painted the walls a soft pink that wouldn’t look childish in 10 years. Ebert also created a cozy, built-in reading nook in the window. “This girl is a big reader, so the goal was to create a space for her to climb up and read,” she says. “When your home is smaller, storage is high on the priority list. You need ways to conceal toys and places to put everything away.”

THINK PINK

Ebert painted the drab gray walls, trim, and baseboards with Farrow & Ball’s Pink Ground. She enlisted a carpenter to build a storage bench and custom shelving in the empty space around the window, which she dressed up with lilac drapes. “That fabric was the jumping-off point for our color palette; it kickstarted the whole thing,” she says. “We decided to be fun and playful and add fringe from Samuel & Sons.” She used the same fabric for the window seat cushion and added custom polka-dot pillows made with Rebecca Atwood fabric. 

LIGHT IT UP

The red six-arm light from Stray Dog Designs adds a pop of color, and the gold scalloped socket covers complement the gold sconces that frame the bed. Ebert had the patterned rug from Stark Carpet custom cut to fit the room. The upholstered bed from Coley Home has a delicate pink-and-white ticking stripe pattern, and the shams, from Biscuit Home, have a lilac scalloped hem that matches the window treatments. “We tried not to overcrowd the room with furniture,” Ebert says. “They don’t have a playroom, so this is her space to play.”

MIX AND MATCH

Ebert found the three-drawer dresser with white foliage spirals at Anthropologie. “It’s girly, but it still feels grounded,” she says. “I love bringing in a different material, like that bone inlay.” The heart-shaped mirror is from Crate & Kids, the strawberry table lamp from Stray Dog Designs, and the jewelry-inspired brass star knobs on the drawers beneath the window seat from Modern Matter. “We picked colors and accents that felt personal to her,” Ebert says. “With kids’ rooms, you want to create a space that has longevity. If you’re going to invest in a space like this, you want it to still feel current in five years.”
