DENVER (KDVR) — 12 people have been arrested, with 11 of the arrests connected to “secondary marches” after the “No Kings” rally on Saturday, according to police.

“No Kings” rallies were held nationwide and across Colorado, including in downtown Denver and in the area of the Colorado Capitol Building.

The Denver Police Department said to FOX31 that around 3:30 p.m., most protesters who were located in the areas of downtown Denver and the State Capitol Building had left “following a peaceful march.”

However, the department said that around 3:50 p.m., a “smaller group of protesters” allegedly began a second march moving towards the intersection of 20th Street and Chestnut Street.

The department said its officers had been staged at the intersection in order to stop the group from accessing Interstate 25.

“Numerous loudspeaker announcements were made to the protestors as they approached and gathered at this location that they would not be allowed to access the highway, and that reasonable force – including chemical munitions – could be used to deny access to the highway,” said a DPD spokesperson to FOX31.

According to DPD, at around 4:05 p.m., the agency’s officers had “declared it an unlawful assembly,” issuing multiple orders to disperse. At around 4:10 p.m., officers then started to deploy smoke and pepper balls to disperse the group and several arrests were made.

A DPD spokesperson said in a later update that at around 6:45 p.m. a group of protesters marched to 6th Avenue and Santa Fe Drive, where officers were staged to prevent the group from accessing the highway.

“Several loudspeaker announcements were made declaring it an unlawful assembly and for the group to disperse,” said the DPD spokesperson.

Officers then deployed smoke and dispersed the group. During that time, DPD said officers arrested three individuals.

According to the department, preliminary information indicated that the 12 arrests were for:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Assault on a Peace Officer
  • Graffiti
  • Other municipal offenses

There is no information at this time on the identities of the 12 arrested or if charges will be filed.
