Denver Broncos set to host Green Bay Packers for joint practice before game

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (KDVR) — A young and hungry team can be very dangerous. Just ask Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.
“I think when a team’s young, they only know what the coach tells them and they believe it and they buy it,” Joseph said Thursday as the Broncos start to put the finishing touches on the 2024 training camp. “It’s a young, open-minded group that’s talented enough to win.”
Joesph understands the pressure to ride the ship in Denver. From playing at the University of Colorado to his time as head coach of the Broncos (2017-18), Joesph understands the importance of football in the Rocky Mountain region. Since Super Bowl 50, he has been one of five coaches to lead the orange and blue.
“It’s been a long time since this team’s been in the playoffs, but things are being done right,” Joseph said. “Coach Payton’s come in and he has changed the culture. It’s not the same team it was, even last year. We’re young, but it’s a smart, tough, confident group.”
That confidence will be tested Friday when the Green Bay Packers join up with Denver in a joint practice at Broncos Park. It is expected that both teams will showcase their top players, creating a competitive environment at training camp.
“I think it gives you as much as anything a good evaluation of your guys against different players,” offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi told reporters ahead of the joint practice. “It’s probably a little more realistic at this point of camp to gameday.”
And for the Broncos, that includes rookie quarterback Bo Nix, who will get the start Sunday.
“Quarterbacks are ultimately measured by scoring points, and he did that,” Lombardi said, looking back on Nix’s debut last Sunday in a 34-30 win against the Indianapolis Colts. “It wasn’t perfect, a lot of things that he can improve on, which is what you would expect. Nothing better than a game situation to help you do that.”
Extra Points
- Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett was joined by his good friend Sean Payton during practice Thursday. Garrett was spotted talking to the quarterbacks in great detail after practice.
- Former Broncos safety Justin Simmons signed a reported one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons worth $8 million.
- Denver will wear their “summer white” uniforms for the first time at Empower Field this season, with orange pants against the Green Bay Packers.
