Democrats host ‘People’s State of the Union’ amid Trump’s address, citing crisis and rising costs

Over a dozen Democrats, boycotting President Trump’s State of the Union, gathered outside the Capitol, asserting the nation is in crisis

WASHINGTON — As President Donald Trump prepared to appear before the country to give his State of the Union, over a dozen Democrats were taking the stage outside the Capitol.

“The true State of Union is this — this union is in crisis,” said Senator Chris Murphy.

They boycotted his address and spoke out against him at essentially an alternative State of Union — dubbed the People’s State of the Union.

Members of Congress who attended argued Trump’s address would not tell the reality of what people are facing. So, they showed up here instead to speak out.

“We know the truth. We’re living the truth. We know the fear our families are facing of being hunted down by ICE,” said Representative Summer Lee. “We know our neighbors are working 2-3 jobs to make ends meet.”

Those who spoke raised concerns about higher healthcare costs, the rising cost of living — and immigration enforcement across the country.

Hundreds of people gathered at the National Mall in support.

Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen was there, with Dr. Jenna Norton as his guest. She says she was placed on administrative leave from her job with the NIH in 2025 after she spoke out against Trump’s cuts to health research.

“We know the state of our union. We know it is under attack by a lawless president who is shredding our constitution and who is attacking our democracy,” said Van Hollen.

The event was scheduled to run throughout the duration of the State of the Union.
