The shooting happened on Hampton Point Drive, off of Briggs Chaney Road.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — An investigation is underway after a deadly shooting involving police happened overnight at a Silver Spring apartment.

Officers with the Montgomery County Department of Police responded to Hampton Point Drive, off of Briggs Chaney Road, after a call came in around 11:40 p.m. Wednesday regarding a person in distress. On the way to the location police heard gunshots coming from inside the residence.

Montgomery County Police initiated an emergency response, and SWAT responded to the location. After trying to negotiate with the man inside, who was armed with a gun, police said they made the decision to enter. The man was then shot. He was taken to a local hospital to be treated, but later died. 

No information was released about his identity at this time, this includes his name and age. No information has been released about what led up to the shooting. 

No one else was injured, included the man’s mother who was in the residence at the time of the shooting.

Around 4 a.m., the police department stated on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division had been informed of the shooting and was on the way to the scene.
