DC police investigate vandalism at the home of Congressman Adeoye Ibrahim Yakubu Owolewa, where “F U” was spray-painted on his door.
WASHINGTON — On Saturday, DC police were called to a Southeast home for reports of property damage.
Police arrived at 1430 Tobias Drive, SE, just before 6 p.m. The homeowner, Adeoye Ibrahim Yakubu Owolewa, reported the phrase “F U” spray-painted in blue across his front door.
Owolewa wasn’t home when it occurred; he told police he discovered it when returning to his home around 3 p.m.
“I condemn this form of political violence,” says Owolewa. “I live in a townhome community where my house looks exactly like everyone else’s. This attack seems to be deliberately targeting me. These types of attacks are becoming increasingly common. Political vandalism is often used to silence those who speak truth to power.”
The congressman told officers he doesn’t know who could be responsible for this, and the cameras on his front porch aren’t currently working.
“While I hope this is an isolated incident, I do notice the recent rise in political violence. Home vandalism is often used to intimidate people running for office and/or challenging the status quo. I’ve lived in this house for more than 7 years. I’ve been an ANC Commissioner and current US Representative and nothing like this has ever happened. I truly believe that I was targeted due to my recent statements about President Trump and DC’s leadership as well as my current campaign for DC Council At-Large,” Owolewa said in a statement.
The investigation remains ongoing.
