Danish Antique Diamond Earrings

Happy Birthday to Queen Mary of Denmark, who is celebrating her 54th Birthday today! The Australian Real Estate Agent who met her dashing Prince at a bar during the Sydney Olympics and has now become the popular Danish Queen, Queen Mary has a variety of heirloom jewels at her disposa l, which includes these versatile Antique Diamond Earrings!

Like the Diamond Rivière, the oldest section of the Antique Diamond Earrings originate from Anne, Princess Royal and Princess of Orange, and passed from the House of Orange through the Dutch-born Queen Louise of Sweden and Norway, to her daughter, Queen Lovisa of Denmark.

The other Diamond Earrings originate from Hereditary Princess Caroline, the daughter of King Frederik VI, and are composed of Diamond Buttons dating from around 1840. After her death in 1881, they were acquired by the future Queen Lovisa who left them to the Danish Royal Property Trust, reserving them for the exclusive use of Danish Queens.

Both the Diamond Pendants from Anne of Orange and the Diamond Buttons from Hereditary Princess Caroline can be worn within Diamond Floral Elements which can also be worn at various lengths, making these among the most versatile jewels in any royal collection.

Queen Alexandrine wore the Diamond Earrings from Hereditary Princess Caroline on a few occasions in the 1930s, including the Wedding of Prince George, Duke of Kent and Princess Marina of Greece in 1934.

A few years later, Queen Alexandrine wore the larger Diamond Earrings with the pendants from Anne of Orange with her Art Deco Diamond Sautoir and her Diamond Fringe Tiara for King Christian X’s Silver Jubilee Banquet in 1937.

Queen Ingrid frequently wore the larger Diamond Earrings with the pendants from Anne of Orange on numerous occasions over the years, often with the Diamond Rivière as well as Antique Diamond Brooches.

The Diamond Earrings from Anne of Orange and the Diamond Button Earrings from Hereditary Princess Caroline were worn more rarely by Queen Ingrid but she continued to wear them after she was widowed and into her old age, usually with the Diamond Rivière.

Queen Margrethe most frequently wore the Diamond Button Earrings from Hereditary Princess Caroline by themselves or within the larger Diamond Earrings over the years even before she ascended the Throne, making a pair with other antique jewels like Queen Josefina’s Diamond Brooches and her Floral Bracelet Choker, as well as the Floral Aigrette Tiara, Baden Palmette Tiara, and Dagmar Floral Tiara.

The Diamond Earrings from Anne of Orange were also worn by Queen Margrethe on several occasions over the years, especially in the latter years of her reign.

Queen Mary of Denmark wore the Diamond Earrings from Anne of Orange with the Danish Diamond Rivière and the Pearl Poiré Tiara for the Icelandic State Banquet at Christiansborg Palace in 2024.

Queen Mary also wore the Diamond Earrings from Anne of Orange with Queen Lovisa’s Bracelet for the first New Year’s Levée in 2025.

Queen Mary wore Hereditary Princess Caroline’s Diamond Earrings with one of Queen Josefina’s Diamond Brooches for the first time at the final New Year’s Levée at Christiansborg Palace in 2025.

The Anne of Orange Diamond Earrings were worn by Queen Mary at a Dinner for EU Heads of Government at Amalienborg Palace on the occasion of the meeting of the European Political Community.

Later that month, larger version of the Antique Diamond Earrings, with Hereditary Princess Caroline’s Diamond Buttons, were worn by Queen Mary for the Kongeparrets Priser in Randers.

Queen Mary wore the Anne of Orange Diamond Earrings with a Diamond Brooch which is the central element of Queen Louise of Sweden’s Engagement Bracelet and Queen Lovisa’s Engagement Bracelet for the Danish New Year’s Levée.

A few days later, Diamonds Earrings from Hereditary Princess Caroline were worn by Queen Mary when she was joined by Queen Margrethe for the reopening of the Court Theatre in Copenhagen. There is no doubt the heirloom Earrings will be worn for years to come!
