PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A cyclist has died after a crash where shots were fired in Southeast Portland, leading the suspect to be detained by community members until police arrived early Sunday morning, authorities say.
Just before 3 a.m., Portland police officers responded to reports of the crash involving a pedestrian and vehicle near Southeast Belmont Street and Southeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.
On arrival, officers found an injured man next to his bicycle. Paramedics took him to the hospital, where he later died, authorities say.
Although they also found the vehicle involved in the crash, the driver had fled the scene. But he was later found and detained by Buckman neighborhood community members near Southeast Water Avenue and Southeast Belmont Street.
The suspect is currently in police custody, PPB says.
Officials add they were unable to find any shooting victims near the scene.
During further investigation by PPB’s Traffic Division Major Crash Team, Southeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Southeast Grand Avenue were closed between Southeast Yamhill Street and Southeast Morrison Street.
No other information, including the identities of the cyclist and the driver, has been released at this time.
If anyone has information about this crash, they are encouraged to contact Portland police.
