Cubs in serious talks with Marlins to acquire RHP Edward Cabrera, but trade not yet finalized

The Cubs are closing in on a deal to acquire right-hander Edward Cabrera from the Marlins, according to multiple reports, which would deliver a splash in what has been a mild offseason for the team.

Sources cautioned Wednesday afternoon that the deal had not yet crossed the finish line. The proposed return package was not immediately clear.

The Cubs have been seeking difference-making starting pitching since even before this past trade deadline, when they judged the price to be too steep to acquire a marquee starter with multiple years of control. The market appears to have shifted enough for the Cubs to upgrade their rotation.

With Cabrera, 27, the Cubs would be getting a power arm with plenty of upside. But with his youth, years of club control and high ceiling come the risk of his injury history.
