The Cleveland-based world/jazz ensemble Drumplay has performed locally for more than 30 years. The group fuses elements of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Middle Eastern music with jazz and has released more than ten albums.
Some of Drumplay’s work features the poetry of the late Daniel Thompson, Cuyahoga County’s First Poet Laureate. His work often spoke to issues of homelessness and social justice, and Drumplay often supports charitable causes too.
The group has just announced it’ll play a benefit concert at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Winchester in Lakewood. Proceeds will go to the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless. Last year, it raised $1,000 for the organization, and Drumplay leader James Onysko would like to make a similar sized donation in the wake of this year’s concert.
Special musical guests for the show include singer and flautist Nancy Redd and poet and spoken word artist Ray McNiece.
