Cleveland official won’t get job back after crash with kids in city car: I-Team

CLEVELAND (WJW) – The FOX 8 I-Team has found a top Cleveland official will not get her job back, losing a furious fight after crashing with kids in a city car.

Former Assistant Safety Director Jakimah Dye won’t be coming back to work.

Dye made headlines last year while getting fired after crashing a city car with four kids inside.

She fought for a year and a half to get her job back, but the Civil Service Commission has voted down an appeal.

The incident with the city car violated policy, and records show Dye didn’t immediately reveal she had kids with her.

Records also show she had permission from her boss to transport kids. Karrie Howard resigned after being questioned by the I-Team.

At a hearing, Dye’s lawyer argued she received more severe punishment than other city employees.

“Other employees have engaged in far worse conduct without similar consequence,” he said. “For 13 years, Jakimah was a stellar employee of the city of Cleveland.”

But, records show the Civil Service Commission found the city fired Dye for dishonesty and the city met its burden of proof.

“The policy calls for removal for dishonesty,” a city attorney argued.

This case led Mayor Justin Bibb to call for an overall review of the use of city take-home cars. We’ve asked for a report on that again and again. The city has never given us that report or any new citywide policy. We recently filed another records request.

In this case, Dye fought for well over a year, but again, the Civil Service Commission has decided she’s not getting her job back.
