MASONTOWN, W.V. (WJW) – A 19-year-old fugitive accused of killing another man in Cleveland earlier this year was arrested in West Virginia on Wednesday afternoon, investigators said.
According to U.S. Marshals, the Mountain State Fugitive Task Force arrested Waymon Donat in Masontown. He was wanted for aggravated murder by the Cleveland Division of Police.
Cleveland officers responded after a vehicle crashed into a utility pole in the area of E. 55th Street and Cedar Avenue on April 5.
When they got there, officers found a driver with gunshot wounds to the head and neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators also found bullet holes in the driver side door.
A preliminary investigation determined that people in two vehicles got into an altercation that led to an exchange of gunfire.
Through the investigation, detectives identified the suspect as Donat. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force started searching for Donat in May, but investigators later found out that the suspect left the state and was likely residing in West Virginia.
On Wednesday, agents with the US Marshals Mountain State Fugitive Task Force tracked down and arrested Donat at a residence in the 1200 block of Cale Road in Masontown.
He is currently being held in West Virginia before being extradited back to Cuyahoga County to face the aggravated murder charges.
“These fugitives think they can flee to other states to avoid being arrested, but our reach is nationwide,” U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said in a press release. “We don’t ever stop looking for a fugitive no matter how long they have been wanted for or how far they flee.”
