CLEVELAND (WJW) – It would be one of Northeast Ohio’s most significant events. Tuesday, the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission and Destination Cleveland announced they are making a bid to host the 2030 Special Olympics USA Games.
“This is a very competitive bid, but quite frankly we like doing hard things. We are good at it,” said David Gilbert, president and CEO of Greater Cleveland Sports Commission and Destination Cleveland.
The games attract more than 5,500 athletes and coaches from all 50 states with another 100,000 family and friends in attendance.
The events take place over eight days in late June and early July with 16 different sports competing.
“Our main hubs would be downtown, with the convention center and hotels. Cleveland State and Case, John Carroll. We think we will have a package that lines up really well,” said Gilbert.
Gilbert added the games would have an estimated $70 million economic impact on Northeast Ohio.
The deadline for the bid is Oct. 1.
In the meantime, the commission is seeking around 10,000 volunteers for the games.
